Santa Clara County Finalizes Purchase of Regional Medical Center
A significant milestone in the preservation of its renowned health-care sphere, the County of Santa Clara has officially purchased the property of Regional Medical Center located in East San Jose. The county has now taken over operations at the hospital’s 258-bed substance on April 1, wading its site into the new Santa Clara Valley Healthcare System, the second-largest county-run health and hospital network in California.
This is a crucial step towards marking a lasting exhaling of silence after a nearly exact year-long journey that saw disquiet among locals and officials cum residents after the HCA Healthcare, the stretch of the landslide from the hospital’s core owner that downgraded the trauma center at the time. With trauma care services dwindling in the area, they’d fretted over “taking their fall campaign” for want of a better phrase. They now expect that Regional Medical Center will eventually become the fourth hospital under the Santa Clara Valley Healthcare System.
The medical management entity of the County of Santa Clara approaches the deal with a total price of $150 million, which comes down in equity from the $175 million price range set in August. According to County Executive James Williams, “It is a strategic win for the community.”

Addressing the Concern of Trauma Care
The level II to level III trauma downgrade of Regional Medical Center by HCA was generally met with concern, primarily because East San Jose does not have another level II facility. HCA did keep some life-saving services such as trauma in the facility after some public pressure, but it did lead to a general closure of specialized services for both stroke and cardiac arrest patients.
Consequently, the county has decided to buy this hospital and bring these vital services back to this area with return plans to restore the Level II trauma center of Regional Medical Center just immediately they take the operation. Apart from these, he also expressed some hopes that they would soon return their program for both stroke and heart attack patients very quickly after such a transition.
Simple Transition for Patients and Workforce
There will be no disruption to services for a hospital; according to Williams, ” a smooth transition with the switch overnight for the hospital moving from HCA to county operation. Everything will continue unaffected.”
A commitment to bringing labor and delivery services back online again after a two-year hiatus was made by county officials. They have not yet determined the timeline for when the services will be restored, only that it is a priority for them to re-establish them.
A Major East San Jose Resource
“We have big plans to bring healthcare access back to the East Side of San Jose in most of the areas,” said Supervisor Betty Duong, whose district includes Regional Medical Center. “Downscaling health services at the Regional Medical Center cut through East San Jose,” she said. “This purchasing is a sine qua non of health in our neighborhood—more than for marginalized populations historically.”
As Santa Clara County geared up to receive Regional Medical Center, officials have pledged to focus on providing a strong healthcare network across all regions, giving everyone the right access to care whenever they might need it.
